Vera Frances Owens Shirley, 84, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, a native of Cato, died Tuesday, January 28, 1997 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in North Little Rock. Born July 30, 1912, a daughter of Robert and Bertha Springer Owens, she was retired from Redmond Motors and a member of Plainview Pentecostal Church. Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Ison of North Little Rock; three sisters, Edna Jones of Perryville, Floy Shirley of Gravel Ridge and Velma Red of Mabelvale; and two great grandchildren. Burial was at the Gravel Ridge Cemetery. She was buried on January 31, 1997. Upon arriving home from the funeral the family discovered that William, her husband, had died that day. That was on Friday and his funeral was held on the following Tuesday.

Vera married William Henry SHIRLEY on 25 Dec 1930 in Pulaski County, Arkansas. William was born on 16 Feb 1905 in Point Cedar, Hot Springs County, Arkansas. He died on 31 Jan 1997 in North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas and was buried in Gravel Ridge Cemetery, Pulaski County, Arkansas.

William Henry Shirley, 91, of North Little Rock, brother of Coy Shirley of
Greenbrier, died Friday, January 31, 1997 at his home. Born Feb 16, 1905 in Point Cedar (Hot Springs County), a son of James and Mesa Wade Shirley, he was retired from Shirley Electric and was a member of Plainview Pentecostal Church. Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Ison of North Little Rock; another brother, Elmer Shirley of North Little Rock; two sisters, Ruby Ison of Cabot and Ruth Lawrence of North Little Rock; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Frances Owens
Shirley. Burial will be in the Gravel Ridge Cemetery. He died sometime during
the day of his wife's funeral. The family discovered this when they returned
home from her funeral.

William and Vera had the following children:

Enlisted in the U S Navy on March 21, 1941. Retired on December 20, 1960 as Chief Air Traffic Controller. During World War II he served aboard the USS ENTERPRISE and USS SARATOGA. For duty aboard the ENTERPRISE received the following: "Presidential Unit Citation"............."For consistently outstanding performances and distinguished achievement during repeated action against enemy Japanese forces in the Pacific War Area, December 7, 1941 to November 15, 1942. Participating in nearly every major carrier engagement in the first year of the war, the ENTERPRISE and her Air Group, exclusive of her far-flung destruction of hostile shore installations throughout the battle area, did sink or damage, on her own, a total of 35 Japanese vessels and shoot down a total of 185 Japanese aircraft. Her aggressive fighting spirit and super combat efficiency are fitting tribute to the officers and men who so gallantly established her as a solid bulwark in defense of the American Nation: Gilbert and Marshall Island Raid, February 1, 1942; Wake Island Raid, February 24, 1942; Marcus Island, March 4, 1942; Battle of Midway, June 4/6, 1942; Occupation of Guadacanal, August 7/8, 1942; Battle of Stewart Islands, August 24, 1942; Battle of Santa Cruz Islands, October 26, 1942; Battle of Solomon Islands, November 14/15, 1942. For the President, FRANK KNOX, Secretary of the Navy.
