He died on 6 Apr 1824 in Perch River, Jefferson County, New York.

William Webb served on the frigate "Trumbull". He was captured and imprisoned in New York Harbor on the prison ship "Jersey". (see "Connecticut men in the war of Revolution" p.624) William Webb, at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War was a shoemaker. At the age of 19 he enlisted on board the "Trumbull", a frigate named after the Governor. The first captain was Captain Dudley Saltonstall and the second was Captain J Nicholson of Pennsylvania. The "Trumbull" was captured off the Delaware Capes by the British ships "Iris" and "General Monk" after a gallant resistance in which the Trumbull lost 5 men killed and 11 wounded. After the surrender, William was placed on board the prison ship "Jersey", as the following statement by Reverand Abner Webb (son of William) shows; My father, William Webb was taken prisoner by the English in 1779 and was confined in the famous prison ship "Jersey" in the harbor of New York in the autumn of 1779 and 1780. In the fall a wealthy prisoner purchased William Webb's freedom or he was exchanged. He then proceeded to purchase stoves and a supply of wood to supply the other prisoners. As soon as he left the ship, the stoves and the wood were taken from the prisoners by their British captors. This left the prisoners without fire for the whole winter, either for warming or cooking. Many of the prisoners froze their feet until they came off at the ankle and many died. Some were removed to the hospital ship which was about 15 rods away. The smallpox came among them. When my father saw that he had the symptoms of it he went to a young British officer, with whom he had become intimate, and said "I shall certainly die here". The officer gave him some gin which brought out the postules and he always claimed the young officer saved his life. Many starved to death. In the spring someone struck a spark that set the old "Jersey" ship on fire. The ice in the river was breaking up and my father (then 21 years old) and another man pulled up on deck the sick who reached up their hands. They then ran below to find others, and when they returned to the main deck they found themselves alone, every boat was gone. He was then forced to make his escape on the ice, a cake of which chanced to float by the ship just at that moment. A boat load of Long Island Tories rowed out to the burning ship and using their boat hooks to deliver blows, drove him back aboard the burning ship. They declared they would burn the dammed rebel. They never knew that they failed in their designs. The ship was now ablaze full half it's length. Nearby on the other side of the ship was an old man, paddling a skiff, who took William off the burning ship and conveyed him to another British ship nearby. There he remained with other rescued persons until an English officer came on board to select the most feeble for exchange. My father, ignoring orders to remain and saying to himself, "its go now or go never", slipped among the sickly and was exchanged. After the exchange he returned home and soon after, in 1792, was married to Lois Strong, daughter of Jonathon Strong and Mary Brewster. Lois Strong (first wife of William Webb) was a descendant of Elder John Strong. Mary Brewster was a descendant of Elder William Brewster, who came over on the Mayflower. Decsendants of this line are eligible for membership in the Mayflower Society. Shortly after the birth of their first child (Polly b/d 1783), they moved to Waltham (also called Windham), Connecticut where Amy and Jonathon were born. Before 1789 they moved to Hoosick, Rensselaer County, New York, where William, Jr., Walter, Polly and Silas were born. About 1804 they moved to Wrights (or Floyd) settlement near Rome, New York. Here Abner, Harriet and Lewis were born. They removed with the family to Perch River, Jefferson County, New York on April 2, 1810 where he had built a double log house just below Edward Spicer's. On the day they moved in, his wife Lois died. He had no children by his second wife, Hannah Clapp. After her death, he married a third time to Ester Curtis, and they had four daughters, Pamela, Cordelia, Ester and Abbie. William died here at Perch River on April 6, 1824 and was buried on Jonathon Webb's farm. There is a monument in Perch River commemorating the name of this Revolutionary War soldier, William Webb.

From Brad Sydnor He served as Landsman on the Frigate Trumbull in 1777; entered service 17 April 1777. In 1781 the Trumbull was captured by the British off the Delaware Capes and the crew taken prisoner. He was supposedly confined to the prisoner ship Jersey. He was born in Windham, Connecticut in 1758, joined the Continental Navy at age 19. When the Jersey was supposed burned, he was ordered to carry the sick to the upper deck, and afterwards found himself deserted by the life boats. He had to float away on a cake of ice; some Tories found him and set him back aboard the burning ship where he was then rescued by an old man in a skiff who took him to a prison ship. The Adjutant General of Connecticut makes no mention of the crew of the Trumbul being on the Jersye but it does verify that they were captured. From ...Landeck, Wm. F., Assistant Adjutant-General, State of Connecticut, February 1897 : This is to certify that William Webb served in the War of the Revolution, and the following is his service, according to the records of this office:- On page 599, Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution, is the following: William Webb, a Landsman of the Continental Frigate Trumbull. Time of Entry, April 1, 1777. (Under resolutions of Congress directing that two frigates of 36 and 28 guns respectively, be built in Connecticut, Gov. Trumbull and Council voted February 17 and 18, 1777 that one of these, afterwards named the Trumbull, should be built at Chatham on the Connecticut river, under the supervision of Capt. John Cotton of Middletown. It was completed, ready for sea, about a year later. It's first captain, Dudley Saltonstall, being transferred to the Warren, Captain J. Nicholson of Penn. Took command. In 1781 the Trumbull was captured off the Delaware Capes by two British ships, the Iris and Gen. Monk, after a gallant resistance of more than an hour, during which she was completely dismantled, and lost five killed and eleven wounded.
