DEATH: Beaver Dam Argus, Nov. 20, 1884 Scouton_In this city Monday Nov. 17th, 1884 of paralysis. Mrs. Mary Scouton, aged 84 years. The maiden name of Mrs. Scouton was Mary Baker. She was born in Beekman, Clinton Co., N.Y., April 8th,1800. When twenty years of age she married Chas. Webb. Three children were born of this marriage, Mary Ann, now Mrs. C. M. Smith, Chas. Douglas, and William Pitt: all these are now residents of this city. Mr. Webb died when these children were quite young and in 1839 his widow married Mr. Luther Gilson with whom she removed to Gilson Mills
in Oswego Co., New York. Luther Gilson, now of Milwaukee, was born there. In1840 Mrs. Gilson was again left a widow and in 1849 she married David Scouton and in 1850 they removed to Lowell in this county where Mr. Scouton died a few years later. After this event, Mrs. Scouton resided with her son Luther Gilson, first in Lowell, then for a few years in this city and latterly in Milwaukee. For a few months past she has lived with Mr. C. D. Webb's family in this city and died at their house. About a year ago she had a stroke of paralysis from which she never recovered. Until the time of this stroke Mrs. Scouton had been a woman of remarkable physical vigor and activity, always ready to make any sacrifice of time, labor and comfort for her family. She was a great reader and was especially fond of reading her Bible. This fondness for reading and a naturally good mind, made her a woman of much more than ordinary intelligence. Through her life she was remarkable for her strong love of home and in the homes of her children she will be graciously and lovingly remembered. The funeral took place
yesterday at the house of C. D. Webb and the burial was in Grove Prairie Cemetery in the town of Lowell, where Mr. Scouton was buried [Beaver Dam Argus, Oct. 1, 1859].

His brother, James Webb, applied for the bounty land warrant under the ScripWarrant Act of 1812 for 160 acres which he located on 14 December 1827 in Section 15 of Township 5 North Range 13 West of Faulkner County, Arkansas. Private John Webb : John is the youngest son of Francis Webb & Frances Walker, he was born 20 March 1794 at Mount Prospect plantation, Essex County, Virginia. His father was a sailor & Midshipman in the Virginia Navy during the Revolutionary War, and while serving on the Dragon was wounded in action (see Webbs In Military. John was a cavalry soldier in the War of 1812 and may have battled with some Indians prior to that. His brother James also served. According to his own narrative - While living in the state of Georgia, he joined a volunteer Company of Light Horse for which he was to provide his own mount, and they were ordered to march in July 1812. 13 August 1813 they left Milledgeville, Georgia for Fort Hawkins, where they arrived in 15 August. The next day they crossed the Okmulgee River, and were joined by troops from Washington County commanded by Captain Erwin. In time the army consolidated itself at the point of rendezvous called Camp Hope. He was soon taken sick while in the vicinity, and was unfit for duty. He was taken care of by the surgeon, Dr. Lee and was discharged and sent home. After his recovery, in January, the following year, he purchased another horse and joined Captain Steels Troop of Horse (Cavalry); they were stationed in Twiggs County. They marched to Fort Mitchell, with the intent of engaging some hostile Indians, where they dismounted and were assigned as guards for a wagon train. They marched to within six miles of Fort Hull, where he could hear the sounds of battle, but never was engaged in combat. After muster the next day at Camp Hope, they turned to march home, when he again became sick, this time with the measles. He survived the outbreak and was mustered out 12 March 1814 at Milledgeville, Georgia without pay, clothing allowance or bounty. He was an unrepentant slave owner until the Civil War. Although he considered himself a Union Man, he supported his state and gave large sums to the Confederate cause, eventually losing virtually everything he owned. On Saturday morning last, the news of the sudden death of Dr H Y Webb saddened all hearts in our town. He had passed the three score and ten - still it was a severe shock. But two days before he was seen on our streets, saluting friends in his hearty manner, bidding fair, as all thought, to last many days yet. Alas, that we to whom he has been friend, physician, mentor, should sustain so great a loss. But joy and triumph and glory to him who has gone to a full reward, for his upright walk, for his Godly conversation, his long life of consistent piety, and tenderest Christian charity. Dr Webb has gone in and out of nearly every household in town as friend and physician, and he has borne with him the love, esteem and admiration of all. His tender heart so full of mercy forbade him ever to slight the poor or suffering in body or mind when called upon to minister to their needs or pains. That mercy he hoped for was freely given to all to the full extent of his ability.

A lady of gentle dignity, calm unruffled temperament, deeply earnest and true, modest, shy, and very reserved. So undemonstrative that it was proverbial in the family. She was never seen to voluntarily caress one of her children except when they were babies in her arms. So proud she never cared for display, dress or ornament; though she had beautiful jewelry. She never wore a piece of it. Extremely reticent and moderate in expressing herself, never using superlatives. An earnest Christian. Deep tender abiding love, and withal a most unselfish person. So considerate of others, her home was called "Liberty Hall". Serene and peaceful, her home was a veritable "City of Refuge".
